VERY HARD TO FIND!! I'VE ONLY SEEN A FEW IN MANY YEARS
This is California Division of Mines and Geology Bulletin 183,
Franciscan and Related Rocks, and Their Significance in the Geology of Western California
. This 177-page book comes complete with both of the original maps, one of which is a color geologic map covering a large area. The other is a B&W map of fossil localities.
This is the comprehensive reference that serves as a starting point for any study of these rocks. It is not like many later publications that are loaded up on analytical results and complex theories. Instead this was written at just the right time, when understanding of the geology was based principally on field observations, but that understanding had reached a fairly mature state. The result is that this is an easily understood yet very detailed description of these interesting rocks.
Many common and uncommon rock types are present in this area, including serpentinite, silica-carbonate rock, blue schist, eclogite, and many varieties of sedimentary rocks. Exposures of these rocks are excellent at many locales. This book is loaded with photographs of rock outcrops and topographic features that make the text even clearer. The color map helps make the distribution of the rocks much clearer. This is an important reference on these rocks that underlie a huge area of California, and it makes for an essential addition to any library on the geology of the region.
