Wood Jewel 23PP Scandinavian Knife Imported from Finland
Wood Jewel knives are made in the far north of Finland, north of the arctic circle, in the small town of Kolari, Finland. Kauko Raatiniemi designs the knives to be beautiful as well as highly functional, using the traditional materials of curly birch wood and reindeer antler. Each knife is a work of art. The sheaths also closely follow Scandinavian tradition, with a deep-pouch design and a twisted leather thong which lets the sheath swing freely and not get in the way. The sheathes also contain a small plastic insert to prevent these very sharp blades from slicing through the sheath and into your hand..Scandinavian knife blades have what is known as a scandinavian grind, which means that the knive only has one bevel, running from roughly the center of the knife to the edge. This is the defining characteristic of scandinavian knives, as most other types of knive blades have two bevels: one that slopes more gently towards the edge, and then another bevel that slopes more sharply to form the actual edge of the blade. Scandinavian blades are very easy to sharpen, and very difficult to sharpen incorrectly. You don't need any kind of pre-formed sharpening jig or device or tool kit, just a flat stone. Lay the knife blade on top of the stone, or lay the stone on the knife, tilted to follow the angle of the bevel, and start running it back and forth until it gets sharper. The knife controls the angle for you. This also makes it much easier to sharpen a blade in the field. Scandinavian knives are also superior for wood carving, as again the single-bevel design controls the angle for you. Most Scandinavian knives don't have finger guards, which is why the maker named this the "children's knife," although honestly it's the perfect size for carving and whittling, and the guard allows you to apply more force without worrying about your fingers slipping onto the blade. The handle is made from curly birch wood, sanded, oiled, and polished to a smooth finish, and has a hooked pommel to help you maintain your grip. The full-length tang is evident by the brass nut on the pommel, giving this knife added durability. The sheath is nicely detailed with stamped and stained artwork, has a snap closure to keep the knife securely in place, and contains a plastic liner to prevent the very sharp blade from slicing through.Below are the detailed measurements of this knife. One important note: for best comfort and grip, the length of your middle finger should be similar to the circumference of the handle.Blade Material: 0.8% high carbon steelKnife Length: 7.5 inches (19 cm)Blade Length: 3.25 inches (8.3 cm)Blade Width: 0.65 inches (1.7 cm)Blade Thickness: 0.11 inches (2.8 mm)Knife Weight: 2.2 ounces (62 grams)Handle Length: 4 inches (10.2 cm)Pommel: tang end w/ brass nutHandle Circumference: 3 inches (7.6 cm)Handle Material: curly birchSheathed Weight: 3.4 ounces (96 grams)Sheathed Length: 8.25 inches (21 cm)Belt Loop Width: 2 inches (5.1 cm)
