RARE IN NIVE HARD COVER!!  ONLY ONE AVAILABLE!!
This is USGS Professional Paper 481,
Geology and Petrology of the Ute
Mountains
Area, Colorado
. Published in 1965, this is a pretty scarce item! This 74-page
hard cover
book provides an exhaustive look at the geology of this interesting and beautiful area. It comes complete with the original large, full color geologic map. These were
originally
issued in paper covers but this was rebound by a mining company and apparently never used, as the only check-out on the library card is to the bookbinder!!
This region is within the Colorado plateau, but has numerous igneous bodies that have intruded as stocks and sills, significantly modifying the original sedimentary rocks. In addition the area is known for some uranium, vanadium and copper deposits around the northern margin of the study area.
Among these are several
mentioned
and described in the text:
Cliff House claims, including the Cliff House, Cliff House #2, and
Cliff House #2 prospects.
Three States prospects
Karla Kay mine
Coffin's prospect
Battle Rock workings
Ute Creek Dike prospects
Little Maude mine
Minerals I saw mentioned in the text at these prospects include:
Barite
Malachite
Pintadoite
Chalcopyrite
Azurite
Pyrite
Carnotite
Gypsum
Pyrolusite
There are diagrams of a few of these areas, which contain some underground workings.
Other minerals mentioned associated with rocks of the area include:
Analcime
Thompsonite
Spessartite
This report and map would make a great guide for anyone wanting to explore the old mining prospects of this area for some of the scarce and colorful minerals mentioned above. The map is especially nice; it is very colorful, has some very nice cross sections that help display the geology is a clear manner, and is attractive enough that it would look nice framed and placed in a home or business in the area. A rare item in hard cover - it will hold its condition well into the future.
