This is Illinois Geological Survey bulletin 57,
Geology and Mineral Resources of the Alexis Quadrangle
. Published in 1929, this is a pretty rare item. This 230-page book comes complete with all four folded plates in the back plus several cross section fold-out and foldout tables, and numerous photos of interesting distinctive features of the geology. Printed on high quality glossy paper, with maps on parchment, this is a very fine book like they don't make any more.
The area of study includes much of Mercer county and part of Warren county. This area is known for coal beds and coal production, but the geology is noted as being of "more than usual interest." Rocks discussed include Cambrian through Cenozoic, but some of the older ones are only known from drill holes in this area. One of the foldouts is a stratigraphic column of the units in the area, including those known from wells. All the rocks units are described in detail in the text, and there is ample attention given to the coal-bearing units, as you would expect.
The full color map in the pocket is really nice, with a classy vintage style and coloring. The other map showing depth to bedrock is also interesting. The other pocket plates are correlation diagrams, of which there also a couple as foldouts in the text.
Overall a great example of a scarce old report, complete and in good shape. You’ll wait a long time before you see another of these on eBay!
